I Would Rather Be Reading is a non-profit organization providing students who
have experienced childhood trauma with appropriate academic literacy supports. I Would Rather Be Reading affiliates will serve children enrolled in the Jefferson County Public School system. Research suggests that 1:4 students have experienced childhood trauma which has been associated with negative long-term effects on cognitive outcomes (Enlow, Egeland, Blood, Wright, Wright, 2012). It has been found that students who are not proficient in reading by the end of their 3rd grade year will face discouraging hurdles to success in school and beyond (Center for Public Education, 2015). Our mission is for children who have experienced or are currently experiencing trauma to receive intense, consistent, one-on-one, reading intervention from a trained reading specialist to outweigh the negative effects caused by childhood trauma exposure.
